Online Roundtable on New Poems by Edward Lear

Wednesday 16 March 2022, 4.30PM to 6.00pm

Speaker(s): Dr James Williams (York)

In early 2021 the news broke that Amy Wilcockson, a Ph.D. researcher at the University of Nottingham, had come across some previously undiscovered manuscripts by Edward Lear (including poems and a letter) in the archives of the British Library. Join us for an informal and convivial roundtable to read these poems together, celebrate new work by Lear, and reflect on how it fits into our wider understanding and appreciation of his work. Featuring contributions from a panel of Lear scholars:
  • Anna Barton (University of Sheffield)
  • Matthew Bevis (University of Oxford)
  • Sara Lodge (University of St Andrews)
  • Jasmine Jagger (University of Roehampton, London)
  • James Williams (University of York; chair)

The event will take place on Zoom at this link.

The text of the poems is available for download here.

You can read Amy Wilcockson and Edmund Downey's account of the discovery in Notes and Queries here and in the TLS here (behind paywall).
