Biography

Clémentine Garcenot completed her PhD at York in 2025. Her thesis is titled ““I am not writing history”: the French Revolution in the Memoirs of Aristocratic Women (1792-1843)”. Her doctoral project is both interdisciplinary and cross-national as it examines aristocratic women’s representations of the French Revolution in their works of life-writing.

More specifically, her research focuses on the role played by aristocratic women writers in (re)constructing their identity and (re)interpreting history to foreground their agency. Her broader research interests include women’s history, life-writing and treatments of the French Revolution. Clémentine has presented her research at twenty conferences over the course of her PhD and received the York Georgian Society’s Patrick Nuttgens award. She has taught in the Department of English and Related Literature at the University of York.

She is the 2025/2026 recipient of the SSFH/Manchester UP Book Development fellowship and is currently working on her first monograph.
