Equality and Diversity Seminar: Celebrating Pride Month

From optical microscopy to Pride Month of protest

Izzy Jayasinghe

Wednesday 24 June 2020, 4.00PM to 5.00pm

Speaker(s): Dr Izzy Jayasinghe, University of Sheffield

I am a UKRI Future Leader Fellow developing new types of optical microscopy in order to enable new types of laboratory-based, field and clinical research. Over the past few years, I have also been involved in projects to improve equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in STEMM. As an out and proud trans woman, I am particularly interested in the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in our work places.

In this seminar, I aim to cover a broad range of topics including ongoing research and technology development work, as well as projects that I am involved in with organisations like TIGER in STEMM, LGBTQ+ STEMM and the Institute of Physics. Finally, I will briefly outline the implications of #BlackLivesMatter coinciding with Pride Month and lessons that we, in STEMM, could take away from that intersection of marginalised communities.
