Biography

Rob Hodgson is a Reader in health economics with extensive expertise in health technology assessment (HTA), economic evaluation, evidence synthesis, and decision-analytic modelling. He currently works at the University of York and has over 15 years’ experience across academia, consultancy, and national HTA programmes. Rob holds an MSc in Economics from the University of Manchester and a PhD in Economics from the University of Sheffield. Prior to his current role, he held positions at the University of Exeter and York Health Economics Consortium.

Rob previously led the health economics team within the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD), University of York, where he provided scientific leadership across several major national HTA programmes, including projects funded through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) HTA, Evidence Synthesis (ES), and Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) programmes. He has contributed to more than 30 NICE technology appraisals and numerous NIHR-funded HTA projects spanning pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, medical devices, screening programmes, and rare diseases.

His principal areas of expertise include decision-analytic modelling, survival analysis and extrapolation, evidence synthesis, network meta-analysis, and the evaluation of complex and highly uncertain evidence within NICE appraisals. Rob research includes the appraisal of innovative and high-cost technologies, modelling approaches for histology-independent cancer therapies and rare diseases, and the interpretation of uncertainty in healthcare decision making. His research has also examined broader methodological and policy issues within NICE decision making, including severity modifiers, value assessment, and challenges associated with cost-ineffective comparators.

Rob has served as a member of the NICE Technology Appraisal Committee since 2017 and has contributed to a number of NICE methods review groups and policy-focused initiatives.
