Alfredo Palacios is a Research Fellow in Health Economics at the Centre for Health Economics (CHE), University of York, UK. He also holds honorary and teaching appointments as an Honorary Research Fellow at the Institute of Applied Health Research, University of Birmingham, and as a Guest Lecturer in Health Economics on the MSc Global Public Health and Policy programme at the University of Bath.
Alfredo’s work sits at the intersection of economics, health, and public policy. His research explores how we can better measure the effects and value of health interventions and policies—especially in resource-constrained settings—through applied microeconometrics, causal inference, and cost-effectiveness analysis. Over the past decade, he has led or contributed to research and technical cooperation projects in more than 18 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ghana, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
Prior to joining CHE, Alfredo held academic, technical, and advisory roles in Argentina, including as Coordinator of Health Economics at the Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS), Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), and Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Health. His work has been supported by organisations such as the International Development Research Centre (IDRC, Canada), Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank.
His research has been published in leading journals, including Health Economics, Value in Health, PharmacoEconomics, Applied Health Economics and Health Policy, The Lancet Global Health, Social Science & Medicine, Health Policy and Planning, and the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences. He has received competitive funding, fellowships, and awards from IDRC, CRUK, WHO, Health Systems Global (HSG), the Centers for Learning on Evaluation and Results (CLEAR), and the Research Institute for Development, Growth and Economics (RIDGE).
Alfredo holds a degree in Economics from the Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto (UNRC) and a Master’s in Economics from the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP), Argentina.
