Chinese Associations in Singapore and the UK
Supervisor: Professor Gamal Abdelmonem
I will take Chinese associations as the entry point, focusing on coastal cities in Southeast Asia and the UK that have maintained extensive external connections. I plan to adopt a multidisciplinary approach integrating architecture, sociology, and anthropology, and will employ digital technologies to develop a Dynamic Heritage Spatial Network model.
This model will enable me to construct a spatiotemporal network linking clan associations with overseas migrant communities. Through this framework, I aim to analyze the multidimensional interactions between clan associations and urban space, as well as the architectural characteristics of their buildings, to uncover the underlying socio-spatial structures and qualities that shape both the architecture and the urban fabric.
I completed my undergraduate studies in architecture at Wuhan University of Technology, where my graduation project focused on the renewal of historic urban areas, sparking my interest in architectural history. Motivated by this passion, I pursued a master’s degree at Southeast University, focusing on Chinese architectural history — from ancient city walls and military defenses to official buildings — with a strong link to architectural archaeology.
During my PhD, I hope to broaden my academic horizons through cross-cultural and interdisciplinary research. Accordingly, I have chosen the architecture built by overseas Chinese as the topic of my research proposal, aiming to explore sustainable approaches to the conservation and revitalization of their architectural heritage.
