Profile

Biography

Professor Lorraine Farrelly is an Architect and Founding Professor and Head of the School of Architecture at the University of York where she is setting up the new department. This is developing a research and teaching environment with an agenda informed by contemporary research in regeneration of urban and heritage environments, community engagement and sustainable approaches to building and urban design. She is also a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy recognising her leadership and influence in Higher Education teaching and Architecture education.
 
She has written various books and academic papers across a range of topics including design quality, urban regeneration and representation in architecture. She has completed an AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council) funded project on community consultation which produced a report and toolkit to support inclusive community engagement. She has been a research lead on an EU funded Marie curie network REDWELL- focusing on aspects of affordable and sustainable social housing in the EU. She has been part of design review as a Chair and panel member, advising on strategic urban and architecture design projects for Design South East, based in London and the south east for over 10 years. Recently she joined the Yorkshire Design Review Panel. Lorraine has been Chair of SCOSA - the Standing Conference of Architecture, of which all 58 UK architecture schools are members. This group supports the development of policy and quality which affects architecture education in the UK. She is an advocate for broadening access to the architecture profession. She also chairs the RIBA New courses group that advise on architecture curriculum in the UK and internationally. She has chaired professional validation of architecture around the world most recently across the EU, Hong Kong, China and South America.

Research

Overview

My current research focuses on listening and consulting local communities on the future of their towns and cities.

This will be reflected in our curriculum. Responsible design considers society first, where architects and built environment professionals really connect with their communities in the design of our sustainable cities and public spaces.
