Support new staff by helping them learn what is expected of them and how to do their job.

You can support the performance of new staff by:

  • providing an induction process which introduces them to the tools, knowledge and support they need to perform
  • outlining expectations and agreeing objectives so that they are clear about what they are required to achieve and how success will be measured
  • using the probation period and procedure to regularly review progress towards these goals (remember that staff in their probationary period do not take part in annual reviews)

Not supporting staff when they are new can lead to later performance problems, or staff leaving prematurely.
