We're changing our annual leave year
Last month we shared the news that the annual leave year is changing. This is to reduce administrative burden, simplify leave management, and ensure a more consistent experience for all. From 1 August 2026, all staff and postgraduate researchers (PGRs) will move to the same annual leave cycle running from 1 August to 31 July.
The amount of annual leave you are entitled to take will not change as a result of the new arrangements.
What Happens Next?
To prepare for the new annual leave cycle beginning on 1 August 2026, your upcoming leave year will be prorated. Colleagues who currently have an annual leave year of October - September will have their leave entitlement amended within the flexileave app between the 1 and 10 October, to reflect the shorter annual leave year (October 2025 to July 2026).
Any carry forward can then be applied, but please bear with us as this is a manual process. Colleagues will still be able to book annual leave whilst the changes are being made and they can calculate their allowance online if they wish.
To support colleagues during the transition to our new annual leave year, colleagues may, with their manager's approval, carry forward up to 10 days of leave (pro rata) into the next leave year beginning 1 August 2026. Colleagues may also borrow up to 7 days from their 2026/27 allowance during the shortened leave year.
