Revised process open 1 September - 31 December

The Professorial Pay Review process, which has been on pause for two years, will be open to applications from 1 September to 31 December.

Improvements have been made to the scheme, drawing on the positive changes introduced in the academic promotions process. The key changes, which were led by the Remuneration Executive Group, are outlined below:

Process Improvements

  • An updated standardised 3 page application form (to be supported by an academic CV)
  • An updated Head of Department form
  • A shift in timeline to allow longer for applications and decisions in advance of the effective date
  • Inclusion of the Deans in the decision making process (they are now members of Remuneration Executive Group)

Robust Criteria

The academic promotions criteria was recently reviewed, the new criteria will now be an essential part of the Professorial Pay Review process. Applicants will be asked to demonstrate how they are meeting the criteria for their current professorial level as well as providing evidence for exemplary performance in some areas in the bands above. Full guidance will be provided on the HR webpages.

Outcomes of the Pay Review

  • There is now greater clarity on the award outcomes. Successful applicants now know they can expect:
    • One increment within band 1
    • 3% pay increase for those in band 2 and band 3
  • Individuals who are awarded an increment within band 1 will keep their existing increment date, rather than this being reset.
  • Outcomes will be effective from 1 August (in the year after the application was made). Outcomes will be communicated in advance of August to avoid the need for back pay.

Supporting Guidance

The scheme guidance has been updated to provide more support to applicants, offering greater clarity on eligibility, details of all scheme stages, and guidance on how/when to share individual circumstances.
