Moving to known-as names rather than formal legal names
HR will now be using staff known-as names, rather than formal (legal) names in all correspondence.
All staff have the ability to record a known-as first name and a known-as surname in MyView. There are several reasons why staff may choose to register known-as names, for example where staff go by a shortened version of their name, such as Sam for Samantha. Staff may also wish to change their known-as first name and/or known-as surname if they start using a different name but haven’t formally (legally) changed their name, for example, where people get married or divorced, or where people change their name for other reasons.
Changing known-as names doesn't require any documentation. Once a known-as name has been added to MyView, this will be used in all correspondence with you by HR, for example, employment contracts and contract variations. It will also populate some other university systems, such as the People Database and the Staff Directory.
Information for all staff who wish to change their known as name can be found on the HR web page: changing your name and title at the University of York.
Information for trans staff on changing your legal name can be found on the Practical Issues for trans staff web page under the section called Changing your name and title.
