Agreement on the staging of strike pay deductions

Following a meeting between the University and the York branch of the University and College Union (UCU) on Friday 9 March, we are pleased to announce that we have agreed the following:

"Until further notice, the University of York agrees to spread deductions for strike pay for all categories of staff over four months. The University also undertakes to donate all such deductions to student causes, including the Student Hardship Fund. In return, York UCU undertakes to continue advising members to notify HR of their participation promptly and in accordance with their legal obligations, and to prioritise reaching out sympathetically and promptly to students during action short of a strike (ASOS) days, as they have been doing.

"There is a further understanding that UCU's undertaking does not comprise advising activity that would deviate from the mandated policy of ASOS, but that staff will agree to contribute to student learning in alternative ways that will not breach their participation in the ASOS, in the interest of protecting the progression of students."
