Daryl Martin becomes Co-Director of CURB.

Monday 7/10/13

Following Dr Rowland Atkinson's appointment as Director of the York Research Centre for Social Sciences, Dr Daryl Martin joins Dr Simon Parker as Co-Director of CURB.

"I am delighted to take on this role", he writes, "and hope to build on the successes of the first years of CURB. Within a short time, Rowland and Simon have opened up a new and vibrant intellectual space for the public debate of the issues that shape our cities, and I look forward to consolidating our existing activities and extending our reach into new areas of research".

Dr Martin was appointed to the Department of Sociology in September 2012 after completing a Ph.D at York on the neoliberalization of domestic, commercial and civic space in the North of England. He has a long standing interest in the cultures of urban space, in literature and literary theory as a way into understanding the social, and in architecture, embodiment and health. Daryl is currently working with Maggie's Centres to explore the visitors' experience of their buildings, and the sense of well-being they seek to provide. He has recently edited a collection of essays on new urban ruins and peripheral space, forthcoming in the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research. Dr Atkinson will continue to be a key member of the CURB management team as Deputy Director along with Dr Carolyn Snell from the Department of Social Policy and Social Work.
