Bechir Jarraya, MD PhD

Head of the Laboratory for Cognitive and Translational Neuroscience

Neurospin, Inserm Avenir Bettencourt-Schueller, CEA, France

Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery Paris University

Dr Bechir Jarraya is the Head of the Laboratory for cognitive and translational neuroscience at Neurospin, Inserm Avenir Bettencourt-Schueller, CEA, France and Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Paris University where he focuses on the study of functional neurosurgery, including deep brain stimulation, cortical stimulation, cell therapy and gene therapy in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Dr Jarraya obtained his PhD and Masters degree in Neuroscience from the University of Paris and is a certified Neurosurgeon from the same university. After obtaining his PhD in 2006, Dr Jarraya studied neuroimaging at MIT-Harvard and the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) in order to develop direct, non-invasive neural tests for studying the development of neurodegenerative disorders. Dr Jarraya incorporates molecular technology, neuroimaging of primates and primate behavior studies to target the development of gene therapy based treatment for Parkinsons’s disease. This innovative approach examines his gene therapy treatment and its effects from the molecular to organismal level, offering a unique insight into the treatment of disease. He is currently an investigator in the phase 1/2 clinical trial that tests this gene therapy in Parkinson’s disease patients.
