Welcome to a new (academic) year at York! Whether you are new or a returning student looking to get a deeper connection with your study of politics, this newsletter gives a quick weekly summary of the interesting and exciting politics-related things happening in the department and across the University. Hopefully, there will be something to interest everyone across the term!

This week sees the return of the regular Politics Coffee Mornings on Wednesdays from 09:30 - 11:00 in the Politics Reception (Above Dbar). But see below for plenty of other events happening on campus.

Paying for emergency care: Why one size (probably) doesn't fit all

Martin Chalkley in discussion with  Anita Charlesworth, Director of Research and REAL Centre at The Health Foundation, and Martin Campbell, Head of Pricing at NHS England. The way the NHS pays providers of emergency healthcare has been changing with an increasing emphasis on  "blended payment", creating discretion to move away from nationally set prices. This talk will review research we have undertaken aimed at understanding how these changes might affect delivery of emergency healthcare in the NHS. 

Transform Society and your options to work in public service

James Darley, founder and CEO of Transform Society, will present the ins and outs of a career in public service covering areas from education to policing and justice and legal. His talk will cover the state of the graduate market, the definition of public service, the public sector, transferable skills and give you a range of selection hints and tips.
