The deadline for the AHRC applications is 2 March 2012. The deadline for NERC applications is 2 April 2012. The studentship project is focussed on the Holocene shell mounds of the
Farasan Islands in the southern Red Sea, and on the analysis of the
substantial marine-mollusc assemblages recovered from recent excavations
including samples already in hand and participation in fresh fieldwork

The project explores the potential of plant phytoliths to expand our understandings of the use of space within an urban centre of the 14th - 16th centuries. The PhD project will be an integral part of research at Songo Mnara, a Swahili stonetown on the southern coast of Tanzania.

We know from historical records that slaves suffered from a wide
range
of diseases mainly due to dietary deficiencies and malnutrition. Recent
advances in protein mass-spectrometry can potentially offer new
insights into i) dietary deficiencies and ii) pathogenic diseases of
enslaved Africans.
