Who Killed Amy Robsart?

Saturday 11 May 2024, 10.00AM to 4.00PM

Speaker(s): Gillian Waters BA MA PGDip PGCE

The King's Manor building, York

On 8 September 1560, Amy Robsart, wife of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester was found dead at the foot of a flight of stairs with a broken neck and two wounds on her head. Dudley, a favourite of Elizabeth I, was widely suspected of being involved in his wife’s death, which removed an obstacle to his aim of marrying the Queen. This day school will examine the circumstances that led to Amy’s death: was it an accident, or did Dudley engineer her death to further his courtly career?
