In 2023, the archives of the Company of Merchant Adventurers of York, covering nearly 700 years of history, were transferred to the Borthwick Institute as part of a new long-term partnership arrangement. The archives document the Company’s history in ‘venturing’ – business risk taking – and York’s trading links over the centuries. This online course will explore the range of documents in the archive, what they can tell us about the Company – and wider local society – and how they can be used in research. The course will primarily focus on documents in English, and no previous archival experience is required.
