King Arthur’s deeds became known across Europe through a twelfth-century chronicle by Geoffrey of Monmouth; the historical Arthur, however, had first appeared in a ninth-century document. For centuries, Arthur’s life and image have been recalled to suit the political needs of a number of English monarchs. This one-day course will study how the historical warrior called Arthur became the mythical King of the Britons who dominated art and literature for most of the Middle Ages.
