Sound evidence for CPD success

York course meets global training needs

The new CPD course in Forensic Speech and Audio, taught by a mix of members of the department and staff from J P French Associates, was attended by participants from a diversity of backgrounds: police forces in the UK and Brazil, British and overseas universities, forensic laboratories in Italy and France, a multinational software company, an acoustics consultancy firm, and a government crime agency. The three-day course, which focussed on forensic speaker comparison, enhancement of poor-quality sound recordings and authentication of audio samples, will in the longer term be one of two forensically-oriented CPD courses offered by the department. The other will provide training for expert witnesses in the preparation of written reports and techniques for oral presentation of evidence under cross-examination.
