SCEP is installed by default on all supported office and classroom PCs.
Windows 8.1 and 10 users do not need to install SCEP as they already have an equivalent anti-virus software package, Windows Defender. For Windows 7, we recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.
The University's SCEP licence does not cover home use for students. However, there are alternative free and paid-for anti-virus programs available for a Mac. We recommend the free Sophos anti-virus for Mac Home Edition.
The University's SCEP licence does not cover home use for students using a Linux (Ubuntu) system. However, there are a number of free and paid-for anti-virus programs available for Linux. We would recommend the free ClamAV.
If you have any problems or questions about SCEP please contact the IT Support.
Patches for Microsoft Windows are available from Windows Update, which can be found at Control Panel | System and Security | Windows Update on Windows 7, and Windows Settings | Update & security on Windows 10. You can set up your computer to download and install patches automatically, and we recommend that you do so.
Machines found to be infected with a virus, or which have scanning spyware, will be disconnected from the University network without notice.
More information on keeping your computer up to date and protection against viruses and malicious software can be found on our security pages.
