PLANTING FOR THE FUTURE

The CWS Grove is a special place in University grounds containing a commemorative bench and planted with trees for all to enjoy. Location Map

FIRST PLANTING: The first trees were planted at a small, informal ceremony on 12th December 2008.

THE OFFICIAL OPENING was, fittingly, on the concluding day of the Gendering East/West Conference. We hosted a picnic in the Grove at 3-5pm on 10th July 2009, with a short ceremony at 3.30pm when Ann Kaloski Naylor cut the ribbons wrapped around our commemorative bench. This bench was made and engraved by two local craftswomen, Jenny Riley and Katharina Heu, and funded by the York Annual Fund through donations from alumni from all Departments.

GROVE FUND: The Grove has captured people's imagination, and people have given money to help sustain and develop the Grove. The next planting will be in Autumn 2010, with more trees and spring bulbs added to the site.

Grove Team: Anne Akeroyd (almost-retired lecturer), Harriet Badger (CWS Administrator), Joan Baker (alumni) and Ann Kaloski (CWS alumni and lecturer), with generous support and advice from Gordon Eastham and the rest of the Estates department. The Grove project originated from an idea by Jyothsna Belliappa, was developed by CWS (Jyothsana, Julia Carter, Linda Perriton) and Estates ( Gordon Eastham, Chris Sockett), with the opening ceremony and fund-raising co-ordinated by CWS staff and students: Julia Carter, Angelica Liu, Geneva Murray, Hiranmayee Mishra, Joan Baker, Trev Broughton, Ann Kaloski.
