School-based crime prevention: a public health approach

Wednesday 22 October 2014, 12.00PM to 1.00pm

Speaker(s): Dr Maria Ttofi, Lecturer in Psychological Criminology/Research Fellow, Wolfson College, University of Cambridge

A number of systematic and meta-analytic reviews of prospective longitudinal studies show a significant long-term association of early childhood conduct problems (including aggression and bullying) with adverse outcomes in adult life, including lower scores in health indices and higher prevalence of offending behaviour.

Therefore, high quality school-based violence prevention programmes should be promoted and they could be seen as an early form of promoting public health and reducing crime.

This seminar presents results from a systematic/meta-analytic review of bullying prevention programmes. It focuses primarily on intervention elements with the aim of addressing what works for whom and under what circumstances. Results from this review are compared with results from other reviews on general school-based delinquency programmes with the aim of investigating the most effective approaches for addressing early childhood problem behaviour.
