Thursday 25 November 2010, 5.30PM
Speaker(s): Professor Christopher Baswell (Barnard-Columbia Universities, New York)
Professor Baswell is a distinguished American medievalist who arranged the first conference on 'Historicising Disability: The Middle Ages and After' at York while a visiting Honarary Professor here in 2006. In this lecture he will explore some intriguing, powerful and, from a modern perspective, surprising convergences between royal and disabled bodies in medieval culture. Medieval encounters with disability through categories of the extraordinary, the liminal and the transformative have much to say as our own time re-imagines its approach to bodily difference.
