Nerve stimulation treatments for phantom limb pain

Posted on 26 February 2021

NIHR has commissioned a randomised trial following a CRD review on phantom limb pain.

The findings and research recommendations in a CRD systematic review and NHS survey on treatments for phantom limb pain (funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)) have resulted in NIHR commissioning a new randomised trial on the clinical efficacy and cost-effectiveness of nerve stimulation treatments for phantom limb pain. The trial started recently and is due to be completed in 2024.

The commissioning of this trial is a good example of the value of systematic reviews in identifying and disseminating focussed research recommendations to inform new studies which should improve the treatment pathways and health outcomes of NHS patients.
