The research group I belong to investigates the innate immune responses of mammals when they are infected with Schistosoma mansoni, one of the three parasites that cause schistosomiasis.
My project investigates the effects of the parasite’s cercarial secretions on macrophages through the study of signalling pathways related to alternative activation and phagosome maturation. By stimulating naïve macrophages with the secretions and then identifying activated regulatory molecules, the project aims to increase our understanding of the initial host-parasite interaction.
Additionally, by fractionating the secretions, and employing proteomics and glycomics, the work aims to identify some of the components of those secretions and link them to the responses they cause on macrophages.
