Peacekeeping in Liberia: Ten Years On

Liberia has made considerable progress in post-war reconstruction and peace-building under President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first female president and a Nobel laureate. Karin Landgren will reflect on the challenges still facing Liberia (including sexual violence) as the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) starts handing over security responsibilities to the Liberian authorities.

Prior to her current appointment to Liberia, Karin Landgren served as the UNSG’s Special Representative in Burundi and, before that, Nepal. She was the first head of child protection for UNICEF (1998-2008) and was legal adviser to the United Nations High Commissioner forRefugees (1994-1998). She has a master's degree in international law from the London School ofEconomics.
