Mapping Protection Architectures for Human Rights Defenders at Risk

Despite laudable progress in the advancement and defence of human rights as well as efforts towards building a protection regime for human rights defenders on a global scale, the need for protection mechanisms and a robust infrastructure to support human rights defenders at risk has never been more acutely felt.

In this research seminar, Ali Gharavi, Alice Nah, Tallulah Lines and Martin Jones present and discuss findings from a research project aimed at mapping ‘protection architectures’ for human rights defenders globally, with a specific focus in three regions – Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. This involved identifying actors involved in protecting human rights defenders at risk, the types of interventions they provided, the challenges they faced, and key gaps and priorities for strengthening the international protection regime in these regions. This project also sought to chart pathways for facilitative interventions whereby defenders at risk are enabled to utilise self-driven and localised means to attain and maintain their own security, wellbeing and sustainability.
