Citizenship and crackdown on HRDs in the current political situation in India

Restrictive legislation limiting the work and activities of human rights defenders has come into force in India during the past decade. More recently, a controversial bill on citizenship threatens to delegitimize particularly Muslim citizens of India. Assam-based woman human rights defender Bondita Acharya will discuss the crackdown on human rights defenders, the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the process of the National Register of Citizenship (NRC), and the amendment of the Foreign Contribution (amendment) Act (FCRA) during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bondita Acharya is the honorary Director of the Purva Bharati Educational Trust; a steering committee member of Women in Governance (WinG)-Assam, Northeast and India; and a member of the Coordinating Committee of Asia-Pacific Women Alliance on Peace and Security (APWAPS). She participated in CAHR’s Protective Fellowship Scheme for Human Rights Defenders at Risk in the autumn of 2015. Bondita has experience of working in the social sector for more than a decade in Gujarat and the Northeast Region. She has wide experience of programme management, research and monitoring; documentation and monitoring of human rights situations; and conducting training on leadership, gender, human rights and communication. She has extensive experience of engaging with UN mechanisms in Geneva, New York and Bangkok since 2010, particularly pertaining to issues around women’s rights.
