Funded places on Songo Mnara excavations

Two funded places are available for York undergraduates on excavations at Songo Mnara, Tanzania.  This is a great opportunity to visit the Swahili coast, and to participate in a field school on an urban site of the 14th and 15th centuries. More information about the project is available on the main project website: http://www.songomnara.rice.edu/

Excavation dates will be from 24th Jun – 5th Aug 2013, fitting around the term dates of Rice University, Texas. The project is run as a field school for undergraduates from Rice, and we also work with local students and scholars. It is likely that the York students will have to join the excavations at the end of June when term finishes.

If you think you might be interested contact Stephanie Wynne-Jones for more information. Applications should comprise a CV and covering letter stating why you’d like to work on the project. These should be submitted by Friday 22nd February directly to Stephanie Wynne-Jones.

We are looking in particular for experienced excavators, but will also consider students who need to build up their experience. Funding will cover travel to Tanzania and subsistence during the project; students will be expected to pay for incidentals such as vaccinations and train travel within the UK.
