Welcome to Graduates into Work North Yorkshire

Four students on Campus East

Are you a recent graduate from any UK University living in North Yorkshire or a final-year student commuting from North Yorkshire looking to kick-start your career?

Look no further – Graduates into Work North Yorkshire is here to support you on your journey to meaningful employment.

Who can benefit from the project?

If you're an unemployed graduate or employed but seeking a professional-level job and have completed a degree within the last three years, or if you're currently in your final year and commuting from North Yorkshire to any Higher Education institution, this project is designed for you. Whether you're claiming unemployment benefits or working fewer hours than you'd like, we're here to help.

To be eligible to take part in this programme you will need to be:

  • A current final-year commuting student permanently living in North Yorkshire (outside of the City of York boundary) studying at any UK University
  • An unemployed or underemployed graduate who finished your degree in the last three years from any UK University and permanently living in the North Yorkshire area (outside of the City of York boundary)

Please note that current students and graduates who either permanently or temporarily live within the City of York boundary are not eligible for this particular project. However, University of York Alumni and students can continue to access support through the main Careers and Placements provision at the University.

One to one coaching

Graduates into Work North Yorkshire provides personalised coaching to help you identify your strengths, preferences, and career goals. Through one-on-one consultations with our coaches, you'll develop a structured job search strategy tailored to your individual needs.

Our coaching programme will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to not only secure employment but also to manage your career effectively in the long term.

How can a coach help me?

The purpose of coaching is to support you in achieving your personal and professional goals.

A career coach can help you identify the right role for you and help you make the transition into your new role. A coach can help you:

  • Establish your goals
  • Evaluate your situation
  • Explore options
  • Overcome perceived obstacles
  • Commit to actions

A coach offers unbiased, objective feedback tailored to your search and career goals specifically focusing on:

  • Self-awareness
  • Career decision making
  • Effective job search strategies
  • Interview practice

Career coaches don’t promise you’ll be hired after an interview, and they don’t guarantee job placement. Your coach is an ally who is familiar with your situation and dedicated to your success.

What happens in a coaching session?

In your first coaching meeting, you will be asked what you want to achieve from career coaching.

You might be at the decision-making stage and want to gain greater self-awareness and understand your skills, strengths, motivations and values, to make informed choices. The next step will be increasing your awareness of what careers are available and understanding the graduate job market.

Or you may be at the stage of making applications and want to develop effective job search strategies and focus on improving your application skills. The careers coach can help you work on your CV and applications, and prepare for tests, assessment centres and interviews so that you can sell yourself effectively and perform at your best. If you have a disability, your careers coach can help you think about talking to prospective employers to request any adjustments you might need in the recruitment process or when you start work.

Applying for jobs is hard work, and you may experience rejections before you secure the job you want. Throughout your coaching calls, your coach can help you develop career resilience to better cope with this.
