The York Unlimited Giving Day on the 6 & 7 November 2019, invited you to join us in our mission to draw together our global community of staff, students, alumni and friends to tackle inequalities and enable every student to succeed.
The event raised £66,783 from 516 donations, including 195 gifts from staff and students.
This included £14,925 of donations where every £1 given was matched by one of our generous donors. This saw £2,500 donated to Mentally Fit York by Philip Carpenter once the fund received 50 donations from our staff and students, and £2,500 donated by Professor Colin Mellors when we reached a total of 375 Giving Day donors.
Wendy, one of our newest York Opportunity Scholars, now studying a BSc in Adult Nursing, asked us to pass along this message to you.
“When I heard I was awarded the York Opportunity Scholarship, I was elated, overwhelmed, and proud. This scholarship made me feel supported by the university, its donors and alumni and that I am welcome there despite my disadvantaged social background and physical and learning disabilities.
I will put the scholarship towards the cost of study equipment needed due to my dyslexia, costs of travelling to my nursing placements and to hopefully attend the Transplant games, where transplant survivors like myself compete with each other in over 25 sports. Thanks to your generous support, this scholarship will allow me to act as a voice for all those that are under-represented in university education and to hopefully show others that it is possible to do so, no matter their background or circumstances. Thank you!”
The response from students, staff, alumni and the wider community is beyond what we could have hoped for. Thankyou for being part of our first ever giving day and responding in the way that you did.
