A head and shoulders photo of Emily Vizard

My name is Emily Vizard and I studied the BSc in Film and Television Production in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television and I graduated in 2014.

What did you do after graduating?

After graduating, I was very lucky to be part of an independent crew that worked out in China, creating promotional films for a province just outside of Beijing. I was the sound recordist and post-production audio mixer. After my time there, I applied for as many work experience places as I could back in the UK and had a short time shadowing at Shepperton Studios.

What do you do now?

I now work as an audio operator for the advertising agency, VCCP. My job involves everything from recording voice actors and sound design to sound editing and audio mixing. I’ve worked on projects for a myriad of clients including O2, Compare the Market, Canon, Easyjet and Domino's to name but a few! Every day is different for me, and I love it! I could be creating a soundscape for a Star Wars Facebook Live event one day and recording voice-overs for some familiar animated meerkats the next!

In doing your degree what has helped you in your professional life?

Through studying Film and Television Production, I was able to learn the ins and outs of the entire production process. I was able to learn how to use the most up-to-date software used in the industry, which really gave me a head start when diving into my first projects.

Why did you choose the University of York?

I know it sounds cliché but I really did get “that feeling” when I stepped through the doors of TFTV. I was blown away by the facilities the course has to offer and I really liked the ratio between practical and theory work. Of all the courses that I’d seen, this one was by far the most interesting. Plus the city of York is a fantastic place in itself, I feel like it’s my home away from home!

What would you say to someone thinking about studying at the Department of Theatre, Film and Television?

I would 100% recommend it - it was thanks to studying here and on this course that I was able to try out so many options and create so many projects that I found my love of audio! You may even find a new talent in an area you hadn’t considered before. Lecturers and tutors are passionate about what they are teaching and it makes such a difference to your learning experience.

What was the highlight of your time at University?

I will never forget my time spent at York, I made so many life-long friends and memories along the way. I couldn’t possibly choose just one highlight! If I could do it all again I would.
