I applied to study Vision-Mixing for Broadcast Production at the National Film and Television School, as well as to BBC Work Experience and every other scheme/runner jobs I could find! It all paid off - I did a fantastic month’s work experience on Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two (on which the vision-mixer kindly let me shadow in the gallery), which led to more runner work. I started the course at the NFTS in January the next year.
I’m a staff vision-mixer for the BBC and I love it! I work mostly on Eastenders, but I’m also occasionally hired out to other productions. I’ve also had the brilliant opportunity to shadow other shows recorded at Elstree Studios such as Strictly Come Dancing, Pointless and Big Brother.
I first discovered how much I loved vision mixing at York. We had fantastic practicals in the TV Studios, where we were able to try out every genre and every role involved in multicamera television production. When I applied to NFTS I had a showreel of everything I’d vision-mixed at York, and they were really impressed by how much I’d already been taught about multicamera television.
When I first applied the course was only a year old, and I wasn’t completely convinced. However, when I went to an open day and saw the incredible facilities at TFTV I was sold! York is a beautiful, lively city and the University is huge – there are hundreds of sports clubs and societies to get involved in.
Definitely attend an open day and see if it’s for you! I had an incredible time at York - I made amazing friends, discovered my passion for multicamera TV, learned from some really exceptional tutors and got to play with state-of-the-art kit.
There are almost too many to list! To name a few - the 48-hour film challenge at the end of our second year; getting to vision-mix brilliant productions of plays The Dutch Courtesan and The Provoked Wife; the incredible screenwriting module I chose for my dissertation project; having my pitch chosen and getting to direct our final year film Psyched in which Ricky Tomlinson kindly agreed to cameo!
