My background spans English Literature (M.St, BA), Cognitive Science, Computational Linguistics and Human Computer Interaction. Before joining the Univeristy of York I was a post-doc at Open Lab, Newcastle University, exploring how digital technologies can support better civic engagement. I completed my PhD at Queen Mary, University of London, in the Cognitive Science research group. My PhD addressed how people manage disagreements in conversation. Combining corpus analyses and experimental approaches it explored how systematically altering the presentation of an argument affects the deliberative potential of a dialogue.
I am an interdisciplinary researcher working to support more meaningful and accessible engagements with data. I am currently working on the Perspective Media project, exploring how interactive video storytelling approaches can support new ways for individuals to engage with data. My research interests include: human-data-interaction; human centred data analysis; methods for measuring engagement in interaction; constructive discussion; argumentation; data mining; natural language processing; miscommunication.
