Patrick Titley
Lecturer in Multicamera production

I am an experienced series producer, and single- and multi-camera director. I've worked on a wide variety of programmes – drama, documentary and entertainment, and I've directed live shows on every terrestrial channel. I've won several awards, including a BAFTA and an RTS, and I've been a senior executive at a major broadcaster.

Some credits:

  • Opera North: video coverage of various operas, including Ruddigore. (2010: OB Director)
  • Sunday Life: BBC1’s Sunday morning live magazine. (2007/8: Series OB Director)
  • Dickinson’s Real Deal: Daytime antiques & auction show on ITV.(2006: Series Director)
  • Countdown:  Channel 4’s long running words and numbers game.(2005/6: Director)
  • Stardate: Award-winning live coverage of space events for the BBC & Discovery, including the June 2004 Transit of Venus and the April 2006 orbit insertion of Venus Express. (2004/2005/2006: Series Producer/Director)
  • Zapped: Two-hour special for Channel 4 International and Discovery US & Canada, featuring large scale electrical stunts. The show included a successful attempt on the Guinness World Record for the longest human electrical circuit – a million volts passing through 250 people! (2005; Producer/Director)
  • Jungle Run: Adventure game show for CITV in a huge jungle set built in an aircraft hangar. (2001/2003/2005: Executive Producer & Series Director)
  • Junkyard Wars: Two series of the reality game show for gear-heads, made in Los Angeles for TLC. (2002: Series Producer/Director)

I also work as a trainer, running courses in directing techniques; and as a consultant and executive producer: for example, I've just been involved in a project in Taiwan to help their TV science producers make programmes with more international appeal.

I'm interested in two areas: the representation of science on television; and the ethics of film and television production.

External activities

Editorial duties

I'm a trainer and consultant for the TV industry.

I run a one day, intensive directing course for people who are working in the industry and want to improve their skills. It attracts Skillset funding for delegates, and I've run versions of it around the ITV network, and for Manchester United Television.

I've just been involved in a two year project in Taiwan, funded by the Taiwanese National Science council, to help Taiwanese science producers to understand the needs of the international market. As well as running two training sessions, I helped to executive produce six short "taster" films that (we hope) will help win commissions form international channels.
