Thesis - The Presentation of Madness - A Playwright's Perspective

My thesis aims to explore the various ways in which one can present mental illness in a staged play. I will employ a number of research methodologies to extract the dramatic potential from people suffering with mental illness and produce three play scripts which will be workshopped and performed to a live audience to assess the impact of the work. The intention is to raise awareness of mental health whilst challenging derogatory and stereotypical behaviour. The thesis will also investigate the effectiveness of the different ways of collecting data which influence the creative writing process.
