Mr Matt Brannan
Subject Head of Film & Television Senior Lecturer in Film & TV Production

Profile

Biography

Working in film and TV has allowed me to specialise as a director of photography/lighting camera operator; focus puller; clapper loader; and camera trainee, which is how I began my career with ITV Yorkshire working across multi-camera and single-camera productions. Gaining valuable knowledge and contacts within ITV, I later made the switch to work freelance on single-camera feature films and TV drama/comedy productions; documentaries; commercials; music promos; and multi-camera sport for numerous production companies outputting content to the UK’s major broadcasters (BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky) and internationally.

My continued industry work gives me the pleasure of collaborating with highly regarded industry professionals using a variety of new (and old) technologies, further developing my skill-set and knowledge, which I use to directly inform my teaching undergraduate and postgraduate filmmaking; cinematography; and directing modules (to name a few). My professional work and development in industry means I frequently get involved with the department's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities, offering knowledge, skills and expertise to commercial clients on a consultancy basis to deliver teaching on courses and to offer technical advice to commercial clients using our facilities to produce content.

School Roles

I am currently Head of Subject for Film & Television; Programmes Coordinator for the MA/MSc Film & Television Production programmes; and Programme Leader for the MA in Film and Television Production with Cinematography, for which I welcome all enquiries related to this specialist programme.

I am also a member of various School committees including Equality, Diversity & Inclusion and a member of the School Leadership Team.
