Honorary Degree for Sally Wainwright

The Department of Theatre, Film and Television is delighted that Sally Wainwright will be awarded an Honorary Degree.

Award-winning British screen writer, executive producer and director Sally Wainwrightwill receive an honorary degree on Friday, 20th January, 2017, as part of the Winter graduation ceremonies.

Wainwright’s television work, such as At Home with the Braithwaites , Scott and Bailey and Unforgiven demonstrate her ability to construct strong female leads, write brilliant dialogue and to create memorable stories.

In a Guardian review of her latest drama, To Walk Invisible, about the Brontë family, journalist Lucy Mangan remarked that: “Wainwright’s specialist subject is the extraordinary things ordinary people face and the courage it takes to surmount them."

Her most recent television series, Last Tango in Halifax and Happy Valley, have led to two BAFTAs for best drama series and two BAFTAs for best drama writer. Wainwright also received an Edgar Allen Poe Award for Happy Valley, and most recently, she was awarded a Wellcome Screenwriting Fellowship, which she will use to write a new project on the West Yorkshire diarist Anne Lister.
