In the Summer of 2015 (between our first and second year studying at York), we entered a filmmaking competition run by distribution company, FOX Searchlight. A month later, the day before the new academic year began, we found out that we’d won top prize: an all-expenses paid trip to LA!
We booked our flights for July 2016, and spent the year planning, saving and looking forward to our trip. FOX Searchlight even let us extend our time in America so that we could spend the whole month travelling around California afterwards, and finally fly home from San Francisco in August.
We had an absolutely incredible time, and highlights included staying at the Beverly Hills Hilton (where the Golden Globes are held!); going to a film premiere at the Chinese Theatre; and hiking up to Griffith Observatory to see the sun set over the Hollywood sign. Our tutor at York, John Mateer, even set us up to meet with a friend of his who works at 20th Century Fox, and he kindly arranged for us to have a personal tour around the studios. We got to visit the post-production suite, the costume department, various different sets and sound-stages, the writer’s studio for The Simpsons, and met two Academy-award winning sound mixers who invited us to watch them work on their latest film.
It was an amazing experience and hopefully one day we’ll be back!
