Ben Kirman:  PlayOn! immersive technology in stortelling and performance

Wednesday 26th January 2022

PlayOn! is a major European cooperative project exploring the opportunities of immersive technology in storytelling and performance. It involves 9 theatre partners from across Europe, the University of York and the Academy for Theatre and Digitality in Dortmund. The project runs from 2019 to 2023, and is organised into annual cycles of theatre productions on particular themes related to interactive and immersive technology. (https://play-on.eu/)

In this research seminar, I will introduce the project and share some recent work with partners on using game design in theatre productions. In particular, collaborations with Teatro O Bando (Portugal) and their interactive production FUTEBOL, and a collaboration with Pilot Theatre (York), and XR Stories, on the immersive non-linear project THE ARCHIVE. As the PlayOn! project reaches the midpoint, I will also discuss the upcoming production cycle ("Concrete Utopias") with a particular focus on opportunities for colleagues in TFTI to engage with the project.
