Connie and Tristan are taking part in a trial for new anti-depressants when they fall in love. However, knowing the influence drugs can have on the brain, the couple question whether what they are feeling is actually love, or a chemical reaction in their bodies. Alongside this, Dr James, the doctor in charge of this trial, questions the effectiveness of the drug, having experienced bouts of depression herself, choosing to believe depression cannot be medicated successfully.
'The Effect' is a story of love and the fear of not being able to understand your own body, and what you are and are not in control of. Not only are the play’s themes and ideas challenging for its characters, Prebble has written a play that questions what we believe to be love, and what we are in control of when it comes to our own bodies.
