A Masterclass By Michael Billington on Alan Ayckbourn's "A Small Family Business"

Friday 23 November 2012, 5.30PM

Speaker(s): Michael Billington

Michael Billington, the Guardian's theatre critic and biographer of Harold Pinter, is a TFTV professional associate, who regularly visits us to conduct masterclasses on contemporary theatre.
His subject this time is the extraordinarily inventive and prescient state-of-the-nation play - A Small Family Business - which Alan Ayckbourn wrote for the National Theatre's Olivier stage at the height of the Thatcher years.
Michael Billington will both offer an introduction to the play and direct a group of student actors in scenes from it. The event will be attended by Alan and Heather Ayckbourn.
This is the second time Michael Billington has directed a sequence from an Ayckbourn play here.  On that occasion the play in question was How The Other Half Loves, and then too the Ayckbourns joined us. It proved to be a memorable occasion, with the evening concluding with a conversation onstage between playwight and critic.
This too promises to be a very special masterclass.

Location: Theatre, Department of Theatre, Film and Television
