Careers in VFX - Industry Masterclass
Jonathan Rawlinson is based at MUNKY, a super creative Emmy nominated visual effects postproduction hub in Soho, London.
This masterclass is primarily aimed at those interested in forging a career in VFX, but as Jonathan Rawlinson has a very long and distinguished history in film project development and production, anyone with an interest in working with story should consider attending.
**A key reason for Jonathan’s visit is to meet TFTV students with an interest in postproduction, with a view to offering internships for UG & PG students, potentially leading to jobs after York**. Be there. And be amazing.
Prior to MUNKY, Jonathan set up and ran Contended Productions, which creates and develops initial ideas and takes them through to production and distribution, creating films in a diverse range of genres for brands, broadcasters, charities and Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs). Jonathan set up Contended in 2010. Prior to this, he worked with Discovery Networks Europe and a range of different advertising agencies and brands to develop, produce and distribute branded content. He also worked extensively as a consultant to TBWA’s content division Stream, developing and producing content for clients including Orange, Playstation, Muller, Nissan, Capital Partners and the Virgin One Account, as well as for HSBC via Hubbub, an independent content agency, and their parent company, digital agency Grand Union.
He’s worked with a range of talent and produced series for Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg (director and writer of HOT FUZZ & SHAUN OF THE DEAD and co-creators of cult UK sitcom SPACED), David Walliams & Matt Lucas (writer performers on UK hit TV series LITTLE BRITAIN). He also ran the First Film Foundation a non-profit organisation devoted to identifying, developing and promoting new filmmaking talent. He also worked as a producer and production manager for the BBC, Channel Four, ITV, Paramount Comedy Channel, Palace Pictures, Granada Film and Imagine Films.
Simon van der Borgh is a Lecturer in Screenwriting at TFTV. Simon has written feature film commissions for producers such as Warp Films and Met Films, and spec scripts which he's sold in London, New York and Los Angeles. His draft of In Tranzit (directed by Tom Roberts) attracted John Malkovich and Vera Farmiga onto the movie which was released in 2008. As a director he has collaborated with some fantastic talent in front of and behind the curtain and the camera. Highlights include the award-winning Cinderella (Latchmere Theatre, 1985); a 4-part 30’ documentary series Alien Nation for HTV Carlton (TX September 2002); and the last major filmed interview with composer Sir Malcolm Arnold. This was used by Tony Palmer in his 2-part South Bank Show that he also co-produced, Towards the Unknown Region (2004). He has also worked internationally as a teacher and script consultant; films Simon has helped develop include Noel Clarke’s Kidulthood (2006), Justin Kerrigan’s I Know You Know (2008), and Drift, starring Sam Worthington and due for release next year. He has also mentored on many short films in the UK and Australia, with Academy Award- BAFTA- and AWGIE-nominated film-makers.
