“The noise was horrific. We used to say we were bomb happy… after several months of constant shelling, you begin to get- it’s not shell shock- but we used to say we were bomb happy. And I could just feel that starting in myself, and I had to get out…”
A rehearsed reading of this important new play, built from the verbatim testimonies of the last remaining York Normandy Veterans by playwright Helena Fox, ‘Bomb Happy’ follows the first hand experiences of these ordinary young conscripts as they set out for Normandy & follows them from D-day to VE day, as they attempt to liberate France & beyond.
The play uses testimonies from the NVA Collection held in the archives at York Explore alongside interviews held at North Yorkshire Moors Railway, who commissioned the script for Railway in Wartime 2016.
