Accreditation

After completing this degree students will be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the professional regulatory body for nurses and midwives in the UK.

Course content

Our courses are based around four central themes. Each theme covers an essential part of the knowledge you need to understand health and to be able to provide effective care. 

Biosciences and Pharmacology

This theme will help you to build solid understanding of the biological makeup of a healthy person, and then apply this knowledge as you explore how ill health and disease affect the body and mind.

Psychological and sociological aspects of health and ill-health

You'll explore how we view and understand health, while reflecting on how culture and community affect these perceptions. You’ll also examine how health education can be used throughout people’s lives, and discuss how ethical and legal issues inform healthcare.

Professional development and evidence-based practice

You’ll work on broadening your emotional intelligence and develop your ability to reflect on your own work. You’ll also gain a solid understanding of what’s expected from you as an effective nursing practitioner.

Application to nursing practice

You’ll have the opportunity to put your knowledge into action during a number of placements in a variety of settings across the region. Our dedicated practice learning team will work with you every step of the way to make sure you get the most out of these experiences.

Before starting a placement that forms part of your course, you are likely to be asked by the placement provider to sign a confidentiality agreement. This is to ensure that you do not disclose any information that is confidential to the placement provider.

Year 1

You'll focus on developing your understanding of health and wellbeing. You'll also gain a solid grounding in healthcare practice, and consider the role of nursing within health and social care.

In addition to the above you will also need to complete our online Academic Integrity module.

Year 2

You'll focus on ill-health and disease while developing your knowledge of quality care. You'll learn how to take a person-centred approach to healthcare, considering an individual's personal experience of ill-health when deciding how to care for them.

Year 3

As you come to the end of your degree, you'll focus on working with individuals with complex needs, learning how to plan person-centred care in a variety of settings. You'll solidify your knowledge of safe practice, developing a secure understanding of how to access, assess and evaluate information and take appropriate action to address risk.

  • Use evidence to inform decision making when providing and evaluating high quality nursing care across the lifespan
  • Lead, manage and support staff and teams across a range of care settings
  • Access, assess and evaluate information and take appropriate action to address risk, ensure safe practice and improve health outcomes
  • Coordinate and manage care of people across a range of organisations and settings
  • Communicate effectively in an accessible way with individuals and other professionals using a range of techniques and strategies.
Nursing provides the greatest opportunity to learn so much about others, as well as yourself. You will find strengths and confidence you never knew you had: a new understanding of empathy and compassion, and a true sense of pride in what you do and achieve.

Fees and funding

Annual tuition fees

UK (home) or international fees?

The level of fee that you will be asked to pay depends on whether you're classed as a UK (home) or international student. Check your fee status.

Fees for subsequent years

  • UK (home) fees may increase within the government fee cap in subsequent academic years. We will notify you of any increase as soon as we can.
  • International fees are subject to increase in subsequent years in line with the prevailing Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate (up to a maximum of 10%).

Additional costs

You'll have to meet the costs of uniform replacement or missed occupational health appointments. You'll also have to pay for Professional Association Fees (Indemnity) which is covered in the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) or Unison Student Membership (approximately £10 per year).

Depending on what you choose to do, you may also have to meet costs related to your placements. 

Uniform provision, Occupational Health Screening, and Disclosure and Barring Service checks are included in your fees.

Funding

We'll confirm more funding opportunities for students joining us in 2024/25 throughout the year.

NHS Learning Support Fund

Eligible Nursing students can receive a payment of at least £5,000 a year (nhs.uk) to support their academic studies. This is on top of the standard government support for tuition fees and living costs and doesn't need to be paid back.

Living costs

You can use our living costs guide to help plan your budget. It covers additional costs that are not included in your tuition fee such as expenses for accommodation and study materials.

The doors ahead of you are all open, from working in the UK or abroad, hospitals, communities, respite care, assessment and treatment, acute services, liaison services, schools, festivals, universities, research… The list is endless.

We will accept the following A level subjects as a science: Biology, Chemistry, Further Mathematics, Mathematics, Physical Education, Physics, Psychology and Statistics. We do not accept General Studies or Critical Thinking

Access to Higher Education Diploma 24 credits at Distinction and 21 level 3 credits at merit or higher. At least 12 credits should be in science or sociology subjects.
BTEC National Extended Diploma

DDM including sufficient science or sociology related units. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss your combination of qualifications.

Cambridge Pre-U M2, M2, M2 including sociology or a science subject
European Baccalaureate 75% overall average including 8 in sociology or a science subject
International Baccalaureate 31 overall including 6 in sociology or a science subject at Higher Level.
T levels We will consider a range of T Level qualifications for entry. Please visit our dedicated T Levels page for a full list of accepted T Levels.
Scottish Highers / Advanced Highers Advanced Highers - B in a Science/Mathematics/Sociology plus Scottish Highers - BBCC

We may also be able to consider three Advanced Highers or a combination of Highers and Advanced Highers, where an applicant does not meet the grade requirement through Highers alone. Please contact us to discuss your qualifications.

Additional requirements

We usually ask for GCSE English Language, Maths and Science at Grade 4 (C) or above, but we may be able to consider alternative qualifications or experience instead. If you are unsure if you meet this requirement, please get in touch with us and we will be able to discuss this with you.

Core Maths If you achieve B or higher in Core Maths, you may be eligible for an alternative offer up to one A level grade (or equivalent) below our typical offer.

English language

If English isn't your first language you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. We accept the following qualifications:

GCSE/IGCSE/O level English Language (as a first or second language) Grade C / Grade 4

You may be eligible for one of our pre-sessional English language courses. These courses will provide you with the level of English needed to meet the conditions of your offer.

The length of course you need to take depends on your current English language test scores and how much you need to improve to reach our English language requirements.

After you've accepted your offer to study at York, we'll confirm which pre-sessional course you should apply to via You@York.

Applying

To apply to York, you will need to complete an online application via UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service).

You must provide a reference on your application. This preferably should be an academic reference from your school or college. If you are in employment then you can supply a reference from your employer. If you do not supply a reference when you apply your application may not be considered.
