English language requirements for distance learning applicants 2017/18

If you're a non-native English speaking applicant you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. 

You need to show enough fluency in all aspects of English (reading, writing, speaking and listening) to the required level of the course you're applying to.

Exceptions

There are some instances where you do not normally need to provide evidence of your English language abilities.

If you're from a specified majority English-speaking country

If you're applying to a distance learning course and you're from one of the following majority English-speaking countries you will not normally need to provide evidence of your English language abilities:

If you've completed work experience at a specified English-speaking organisation

Accepted tests

The following tests are accepted for entry into degree-level courses:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) (Academic)
  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
  • Cambridge Proficiency (CPE)
  • TOEFL iBT (internet based)
  • Trinity ISE.

We seek formal confirmation of all test results. For this purpose, if you are intending to take a TOEFL test please enter our Designated Institution code 3065 on your test form. If you're intending to take a Pearson Test of English you need to assign your scores to the University of York electronically via your Pearson Vue account. For instructions see How to send your PTE scores (PDF  , 4,070kb).

​​You must have completed the test within two years of the starting date of your course. You cannot combine scores from more than one sitting of the test.
