All new technologies, products and services require careful management to take them from the concept stage to commercial success. This course will enable you to operate within a strategically important part of professional engineering, irrespective of the technical area.

The course is taught by internationally leading experts and practising managers to ensure you master not only the theory of management tools and techniques, but also how they are applied in real engineering situations. 

Accreditation

Accredited by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council.

Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

Professional development

Our Engineering Management Masters course follows a carefully designed Professional Development Framework, created in collaboration with key contributors from industry, research and academia. The framework will help you develop transferable skills and professional behaviours, which will support your studies and future career. 

Through an intensive induction programme and ongoing masterclasses, workshops and activities, you will become:

  • a more personally effective individual

  • a stronger team leader
  • a more effective user of IT
  • adept at research, reporting and managing data.

Course content

You'll develop a thorough grounding in aspects of management relevant to the technical manager, creative and innovative thinking, and a deep understanding of how to apply management thinking to state-of-the-art technology issues. 

A major group project towards the end of the course will help you gain practical experience of skills applicable to management of engineering functions within companies, and to develop your research, team working, problem-solving, personal effectiveness and communication skills for academic and professional purposes.

Research project

In the group project, you will explore a real engineering problem from both technical and management perspectives. You'll produce an individual report which gives an in-depth account of your specific areas of exploration, but also an overview of the whole group’s work.

Throughout this process you will be supported by an academic supervisor and you'll undertake a range of assessment including reflective progress reports as part of your project coursework.

Recent examples of projects undertaken by students on this course have included:

The York approach

Students who complete this course will be able to:

  • Subject Knowledge: Conduct research in business management that takes the full breadth of management and applied engineering to advance the state of knowledge in organisations, systems, algorithms, and devices.
  • Engineering Analysis: Extract and critically evaluate literature and other data about complex business systems through analytical and computational methods and modelling.
  • Engineering Design: Create innovative and optimised business solutions to address real-world opportunities in industrial management and technology by synthesising novel research-based ideas into business models.
  • Practical Skills: Apply professional skills of project management, personal management, team working and communication combined with an understanding of business systems and components, to solve and independently propose innovative critical business solutions to technically challenging problems.
  • Technical Communication: Debate, defend and contextualise information in a succinct and technically accurate manner for business people, engineers and non-technical audiences, and to write and interpret business documentation.
  • Management & Personal Development: Proficiently manage themselves, teams and complex projects in preparation for technical careers as reflective leaders in engineering management.

The MSc was a great experience and set me up well for work life. Teaching location

The School of Physics, Engineering and Technology is based on Campus West. The majority of teaching takes place within Campus West.

Assessment and feedback

You'll be assessed via a range of assessment methods, the summative methods (assessments that count towards your final grade) include:

Entry requirements

Typical offer
Undergraduate degree Typical offer: 2:2 or equivalent in an Engineering programme (such as Electronics/Electrical, Computer Science, Civil, Mechanical, Automation) or an Engineering Management programme. Applications are also welcomed from candidates with high marks in relevant modules or appropriate industrial experience.

If English isn't your first language you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. We accept the following qualifications:
