Visiting Students: postgraduate research applications

Start your application for 2026/27

If you are applying as a research student, please contact the relevant department before beginning your application to ensure that appropriate supervision for your project can be provided. You will be asked to submit a research plan and to provide the name of your preferred supervisor as part of your application.

Postgraduate research students can apply at any time throughout the year. There are no deadlines, but please apply at least three months ahead of your planned study period to allow for administrative processes.

You should apply using the button which includes your proposed start date. When you submit your application, please indicate the dates you wish to start and finish studying with us. Your department will confirm these dates at the point of making you an offer.*

Start your application for 2026/27

The online application system will be closed for system maintenance from Tuesday 7 April at 9am (BST) to Friday 10 April 2026 at 10am (BST) due to an essential system upgrade. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause during this period.

Application guidance

Create an account

You will need to create an account to start the application process and set yourself up as a new user. We'll then send you a confirmation email with your login details.

Completing the application form

The application is divided into manageable sections, allowing you to fill it out at your own pace. You can begin your application, save your progress, and complete it at a later time. Please note that dates should be entered in the UK format (DD/MM/YYYY).

Outline your research topic

If you're a research student, you will need to supply a brief outline of your research topic as part of your application. You will be asked to name your agreed supervisor as part of the application form.

Upload your reference(s)

  • Research students need two academic references

Provide us with your referee's name and email address in your application. Make sure you tell your academic referees that we'll be contacting them. See more below:

Upload your supporting documents

You will need to provide the following documents:

Please ensure all necessary documents are uploaded for your application to be processed. Documents not in English must be accompanied by certified translations, along with the originals. See departmental requirements for more details.

Submitting

Once you've completed the application, please save and submit. The admissions team cannot access an application until it has been submitted.

Once you've submitted your application, you will receive a submission email. You should get a response to your application within a couple of weeks. Remember, applications are not processed until all the necessary documentation has been received.

If your application is accepted, you will receive a ‘Welcome’ email asking you to log in to your You@York account, where you can view your offer letter.

Third party applications

We will also consider applications through third party providers. If you are an adviser submitting the application on a student's behalf, you must enter your email address in the 'New User' section of the application.
