Block Placements‌

If you are interested in teaching as a career and want to see what it's like to work in a school full time, apply for a block placement!

Block placements are undertaken full time for two weeks towards the end of the summer term (Week 9 onwards) and are a fantastic way to experience what it might be like to work in education full time. This is also a great opportunity for students who already have PGCE offers who would like extra experience before starting their training.

When can I apply?

Applications for Block Placements will open Week 1 of Summer Term, when you will be able to apply for a place through the Careers Gateway. Placements are offered at primary & secondary level and sometimes in heritage outreach - once you have applied we will do our best to take your preferences into account via a short interview, and match you to your ideal placement.

In the mean time if you have any questions about the programme, please get in touch with Beth at ysis@york.ac.uk.

What does a block placement involve?

  • Attend a short interview where you will have the opportunity to let the volunteer team know why you would like to complete a placement, and what your preferences are.
  • Be in the classroom full time for two weeks, either in one classroom or on a rotation around your host school.
  • Experience the education system first hand and get a feel for what it's like to work in teaching, and the other professions offered in the school environment.
  • Undertake training from teaching experts, and reflect on your placement throughout with ongoing support from the volunteering team in Careers.
